A Strategic Addition to the Coaching Staff

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially confirmed that former India leg-spinner Sairaj Bahutule has joined the men’s team as their dedicated spin-bowling coach. This appointment comes at a pivotal moment, just ahead of the highly anticipated one-off Test match against Afghanistan, set to take place in New Chandigarh. Beyond this immediate assignment, the 53-year-old is expected to play a long-term role in mentoring India’s spin talent across both white-ball and red-ball formats.

The Pedigree of Sairaj Bahutule

Bahutule brings an extensive coaching resume to the national setup. Most recently, he served as the spin-bowling coach for the Punjab Kings (PBKS) during the 2026 IPL season. His coaching journey is deeply rooted in domestic cricket, having held prominent roles with the Kerala and Bengal men’s teams. His association with top-tier cricket organizations is notable; he was a key part of the Rajasthan Royals’ support staff from 2018 to 2021 before transitioning to the National Cricket Academy (NCA). During the tenure of head coach Rahul Dravid, Bahutule also assisted with India A assignments, further proving his ability to groom emerging talent.

A Legacy of Domestic Excellence

While Bahutule’s international career, which spanned from 1997 to 2003, saw him feature in two Tests and eight ODIs, his true impact was felt on the domestic circuit. Across a career spanning two decades, he was a prolific wicket-taker, claiming 630 wickets in 188 first-class matches and 197 wickets in 143 List A games. This deep understanding of spin mechanics and match strategy makes him an invaluable asset for the current generation of Indian spinners.

Integrating into the Coaching Setup

In his new capacity, Bahutule will fill a crucial void in the support staff, which previously lacked a dedicated spin-bowling specialist. He will be working closely with an elite group of coaches, including head coach Gautam Gambhit, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, fast-bowling coach Morne Morkel, fielding coach T Dilip, and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate. This collaborative environment aims to revitalize the performance of the spin battery, which is essential for India’s success in upcoming international series.

The Road Ahead: India’s Test Outlook

The Indian team finds itself at a challenging juncture regarding the World Test Championship (WTC). Currently positioned sixth on the points table, the team has endured a difficult period, recording four wins, four losses, and one draw. Recent home series results have been particularly taxing, following a 3-0 whitewash by New Zealand in late 2024 and a 2-0 defeat against South Africa in November 2025. With the match against Afghanistan scheduled from June 6 to 10 in New Chandigarh, the focus for the management is clearly on regaining momentum.

The scheduling presents a unique challenge, as the Test match arrives less than a week after the conclusion of the IPL. Integrating a specialist like Bahutule is seen as a proactive step to ensure the bowlers are match-ready and mentally prepared for the tactical demands of Test cricket. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if this new addition can provide the technical edge required for India to climb back up the WTC standings and reassert their dominance in home conditions.
