Rishabh Pant’s Future at LSG in Doubt Following Disastrous IPL 2026
A Season of Despair for the Lucknow Super Giants
The 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season will be remembered as a dark chapter in the history of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). After a underwhelming seventh-place finish in 2025, the franchise hoped for a resurgence under the leadership of star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant. Instead, the team plummeted to the bottom of the points table, securing a meager eight points throughout the campaign. The disappointment has left the franchise hierarchy at a crossroads, forced to confront the reality that their current strategy is failing.
The Burden of Leadership and Performance
The transition of captaincy to Rishabh Pant was initially viewed as a strategic masterstroke, yet the results tell a sobering story. Over two seasons, the team managed to secure only 10 victories while suffering 18 defeats. This win-loss record has naturally invited harsh criticism regarding Pant’s tactical acumen on the field. Beyond the strategic failures, Pant’s individual contributions have also dipped significantly. Accumulating 581 runs at a strike rate of 135.74 over the past two years, he has struggled to replicate the explosive form that previously defined his career.
Tom Moody Calls for a Strategic Reset
Global Director of Cricket, Tom Moody, did not mince words following the team’s crushing seven-wicket loss to the Punjab Kings on May 23. In a press conference, Moody admitted that the team’s performance was nowhere near the required standard. He emphasized that the franchise is now entering a period of deep reflection.
Moody addressed the elephant in the room regarding the leadership, stating, ‘From a captaincy point of view, you know, he’s found it challenging, obviously, and the results reflect that. And you do have to wonder whether that is a pressure that is reflected in his performance with the bat.’ He further added that the management would be giving serious consideration to what the future of the franchise’s leadership looks like, hinting at an inevitable reset.
Internal Friction and Collective Accountability
The problems within the Lucknow camp seem to extend beyond just individual player performances. Rishabh Pant himself highlighted during the season that an excess of voices involved in leadership decisions created confusion, which ultimately paralyzed the team on the field. This lack of clarity was evident in the team’s inconsistency and poor decision-making during high-pressure moments.
Head coach Justin Langer has also expressed clear disappointment with the season’s trajectory. Despite the clear frustration, Tom Moody insisted that the blame should not rest on a single pair of shoulders. ‘I think we’re all responsible,’ Moody noted. ‘I don’t think it’s a time to point the finger at any individual. We all take accountability, and now’s not the time to be apportioning blame in any particular department.’
What Lies Ahead for LSG?
As the dust settles on the IPL 2026 campaign, the Lucknow Super Giants find themselves at a critical juncture. The call for a ‘reset’ implies that everything—from the leadership structure to the core squad composition—is on the table for evaluation. For a franchise that entered the IPL with high aspirations, the path forward requires a cold, calculated analysis of what went wrong. Whether this involves parting ways with current leadership or redefining the roles within the team, one thing is certain: the status quo is no longer an option for the Lucknow Super Giants as they look to rebuild their reputation in the seasons to come.
