Rayudu: Rahul ‘has been fantastic for any team that he has played for’
Following another stellar individual campaign that saw Delhi Capitals finish sixth in the IPL, former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu praised the veteran opener, asserting that Rayudu: Rahul ‘has been fantastic for any team that he has played for’ and thoroughly deserves to lift an IPL trophy. Despite Rahul’s exceptional batting displays throughout the 2026 season, the Delhi Capitals failed to qualify for the playoffs, leaving fans and analysts reflecting on what could have been for the franchise.
KL Rahul‘s Dominant Run in IPL 2026
KL Rahul carried the Delhi Capitals batting line-up almost single-handedly throughout the IPL 2026 campaign. The prolific right-hander accumulated 593 runs, securing the fourth spot on the Orange Cap leaderboard—a position that remains highly competitive as the final stages of the tournament unfold. However, despite his massive run tally, the team’s collective performance fell short, culminating in a sixth-place finish. This contrast between Rahul’s brilliance and the team’s struggles prompted Ambati Rayudu to remark that the batsman deserves a championship-winning team to match his caliber.
The Eden Gardens Masterclass Against KKR
In Delhi Capitals’ final fixture of the season against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens, Rahul played with the freedom of a man determined to sign off on a high note. With Delhi Capitals already eliminated from playoff contention, Rahul unleashed an aggressive batting display, scoring 60 runs off just 30 deliveries.
His onslaught began in the third over of the innings, where he targeted all-rounder Cameron Green, striking a towering six followed by a boundary. Although the remainder of the powerplay was relatively quiet, Rahul exploded in the eighth over against KKR’s mystery spinner, Sunil Narine. He dispatched Narine over long-on for a six and followed it up with a straight drive for four on consecutive deliveries. This aggressive intent allowed Rahul to bring up his half-century in just 25 balls before eventually falling to left-arm spinner Anukul Roy.
Praise from Ambati Rayudu
Speaking on ESPNcricinfo TimeOut, Ambati Rayudu expressed immense admiration for Rahul’s technical prowess and intent, particularly his dominance over Sunil Narine, who has been one of the toughest bowlers to face in the tournament.
“He was picking him [Narine] well and also some of the shots were exceptional. The straight hits that he played against Narine were, I think, some of the best shots that we have seen so far against Narine in the season. I don’t think anybody has taken on Narine as KL Rahul,” Rayudu said.
Rayudu emphasized that Rahul has consistently stepped up against the league’s premier bowlers, mentioning his success against the likes of Josh Hazlewood and Narine. He urged the Delhi Capitals management to construct a squad capable of supporting their star batter in securing an IPL title.
“He is a class player, and Delhi needs to give him a team that wins him an IPL trophy because he deserves it. He has been a fantastic batsman for any team that he has played for. So he deserves the trophy and hopefully he gets it soon,” Rayudu added.
Addressing the Strike Rate Debate
Throughout his career, KL Rahul’s strike rate has often been a point of contention among critics. After missing the latter half of the 2023 season due to a right thigh injury, his overall numbers since 2018 remain highly impressive. He has consistently surpassed the 500-run mark each season, topping 600 runs on four separate occasions, with a peak performance of 670 runs in 2020.
However, between 2018 and 2025, Rahul’s strike rate exceeded 140 in only two seasons, leading to an overall IPL career strike rate of 139.09. The 2026 season witnessed a dramatic transformation. Rahul answered his critics by scoring at an extraordinary strike rate of 174.41, showing a highly aggressive approach that completely redefined his role at the top of the order.
Mark Boucher on Rahul’s Tactical Impact
Former South African wicketkeeper-batsman Mark Boucher highlighted the tactical importance of Rahul’s aggressive style, particularly when facing high-quality spin attacks in the middle overs. KKR’s spin duo of Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy have dismantled numerous batting lineups after the powerplay, but Rahul’s proactive approach successfully neutralized their threat.
“This is the reason why we always say that it is so important for Delhi for him to get past the powerplay,” Boucher explained. “You have a team like KKR, who have got the spin twins [Narine and Varun Chakravarthy] that have really made life very difficult for every other team after the powerplay. And you have a guy like KL who comes in there and he takes the game on and all of a sudden you look at their figures afterwards and they haven’t really had a big impact on the game.”
In that specific matchup, Narine finished with an economy of 9.50, while Chakravarthy went at 8.75. Boucher credited Rahul for setting the momentum that allowed the middle order to flourish. “Their economy rates are still eight-nine, but that is largely due to KL setting the momentum for those overs in the middle. That is what one quality batsman can do if he is in and he starts to dominate the proceedings,” Boucher added.
What Lies Ahead for Delhi Capitals?
Delhi Capitals have been a part of the Indian Premier League since its inception in 2008 but have yet to win an IPL trophy. Having qualified for the playoffs only six times in their history—and not once in the last five seasons—there is always a temptation for the franchise to execute a complete squad overhaul during the auction cycles. However, both Rayudu and Boucher advised against such drastic measures.
Boucher viewed the 2026 season as a campaign of missed opportunities rather than structural failure. “It is a competition of what could have been if you want to look at it like that. Two more wins and they are qualifying, and they look like a good team at the moment,” Boucher remarked.
Rayudu echoed this sentiment, pointing out that the current squad possesses the necessary talent to challenge for the championship. With an experienced bowling unit featuring Mitchell Starc, Lungi Ngidi, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar Patel, complemented by explosive batters like David Miller and KL Rahul, the team has the ingredients of a finalist.
“When you have a bowling side that is that experienced and that capable, and have match-winners in your batting line-up like David Miller and KL Rahul and all others to complement them, that is a side that should be in top two trying to play the finals, trying to win the competition,” Rayudu argued. “Somehow they have managed to just not do things right for the longest time. It is not only this season, for the longest time they have had some brilliant sides at their disposal, and they have never managed to keep them in a good space. I think Delhi should really go back and introspect and come back stronger and I hope they don’t change many personnel, the big ones in their squad.”
