Glenn Phillips blasts ‘silly’ question during heated press conference after GT’s – Glenn Phillips Slams ‘Silly’ Question After GT’s Heavy IPL Loss to RCB
The Dharamshala Demolition: RCB Dominates GT
The IPL 2026 Qualifier 1 in Dharamshala was expected to be a blockbuster clash, but it quickly turned into a one-sided masterclass by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Scoring a mammoth 254 runs on the board, RCB put immense scoreboard pressure on the Gujarat Titans (GT). In response, GT’s batting lineup collapsed spectacularly under the lights, ultimately getting bowled out for a mere 162 runs.
While wickets tumbled in rapid succession at one end, only Shahrukh Khan showed genuine resistance, fighting a lone battle with a brilliant knock of 68 runs. The top-order collapse, which saw heavyweights like Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler depart early, left the Titans with too much ground to cover. The heavy defeat was a bitter pill to swallow for the GT franchise, but the post-match press conference proved to be even more dramatic than the game itself.
The Press Conference Surprise: Why Glenn Phillips?
Following such a significant loss in a crucial playoff fixture, media personnel expected either captain Shubman Gill or head coach Ashish Nehra to address the press. Surprisingly, it was New Zealand international Glenn Phillips who walked into the media room. Phillips was not even part of the playing XI for the match, making his appearance highly unusual.
In professional cricket, the duty of addressing the media after a heavy playoff defeat almost always falls on the leadership group. By shielding the playing squad and coaching staff, GT raised eyebrows, but Phillips stood ready to face the music on behalf of his franchise.
Phillips Reacts to the “Silly” Question
The atmosphere in the press room grew tense when a reporter asked Phillips if the Gujarat Titans had mentally accepted defeat once RCB posted their massive 254-run total. The Kiwi batter did not mince his words, visibly annoyed by the suggestion that professional athletes would surrender mid-game.
“That’s a silly question. That is a really silly question,” Phillips responded directly. “No one goes in there waiting to go, ‘Oh, you know what? We’re just going to give up on this one.’ Why would we do that as professional cricketers? That’s a terrible question. We went out there; we gave it everything. Unfortunately, when you’re trying to chase 250, everything has to go right. And we went out there to try and make everything go right, and obviously it didn’t.”
The Psychological Weight of Chasing 250+ in T20 Cricket
Phillips went on to explain the intense tactical and mental pressure of chasing a target of that magnitude. While modern T20 cricket has seen higher scores, consistently chasing down totals above 12 runs an over remains an anomaly rather than the norm.
He credited other teams for occasionally making the impossible look simple, but stressed the reality of the situation. “There’s a huge amount of scoreboard pressure when you’re trying to chase 250. And, you know, very few teams have done it. Obviously, Punjab Kings have managed to do it a couple of times, which has been phenomenal. And I think they’ve maybe made it seem easier than it is. I’ve yet to be part of a team that’s gotten anywhere near 250, so, you know, sometimes it just is what it is,” Phillips remarked candidly.
Shielding the Squad Ahead of the Crucial Eliminator
Journalists also questioned Phillips regarding his presence at the press conference despite not playing. The utility player handled the query with calm maturity, explaining the dynamics of a tight-knit squad and the importance of shared responsibility during tough times.
“No, that’s fine, that’s fine. It’s all good. Yeah, obviously we’re all part of the team together, and we all have equal media roles to play,” Phillips explained. He further noted that offering an outside perspective can help take the heat off the active playing group. “I think sometimes an outside perspective from someone who isn’t playing the game, especially for the guys that have to now go and play an Eliminator, helps. It’s really important for them to just knuckle down, get their heads where they need to be.”
With GT now forced to take the hard route through the Eliminator, the squad will need to dust themselves off quickly. If Phillips’ passionate defense of his team is any indication, the Titans still possess the fighting spirit required to bounce back and keep their IPL 2026 campaign alive.
