Over the past two to three seasons, the IPL has established a reputation for being heavily tilted in favor of the batters. This trend has reached unprecedented heights in the IPL 2026 season, where scores exceeding 200 runs have rapidly become the standard. Defensive bowling units have found themselves with little to no margin for error as batting lineups exploit every advantage.

In the current landscape, setting a target of 160 or 170 runs when batting first is no longer considered competitive. Chasing teams have routinely chased down these totals with remarkable ease, often wrapping up the match well before the final overs. A primary catalyst for this shift is the controversial Impact Player rule. By allowing teams to effectively field an extra batter or bowler beyond the traditional playing XI, the rule has provided batting lineups with unprecedented depth, encouraging reckless, high-risk strokeplay without the fear of a collapse.

Proposal 1: Complete Removal of the Impact Player Rule

To address this systemic imbalance, one of Sachin Tendulkar’s primary demands is the immediate abolishment of the Impact Player rule. “The impact player needs to go away. That is my personal opinion. I feel when in a T20 format, you just have to play 20 overs, and then you’re adding one more batter to that lineup where bowlers are already being challenged. I find that imbalance,” Tendulkar observed.

According to the legendary batsman, the rule artificially inflates batting strength, leaving bowlers with an unfair and overwhelming challenge in an already batting-friendly format. Removing this rule would force teams to return to traditional squad-building and tactical planning, restoring the premium on genuine all-rounders and smart game management.

Proposal 2: Restructuring the Powerplay with Tactical Flexibility

In addition to removing the Impact Player rule, Tendulkar proposed a tactical redesign of the standard six-over powerplay. Currently, the batting side enjoys a mandatory six-over restriction period where only two fielders are permitted outside the 30-yard circle. Tendulkar suggested splitting this block to give fielding sides a strategic weapon.

Under his proposed system, the first four overs would remain a mandatory batting powerplay under the standard restrictions. However, the remaining two powerplay overs would be designated as a “bowling powerplay.” The fielding captain would have the discretion to activate these two overs at any point during the innings. Crucially, during this bowling powerplay, the fielding side would be allowed to place three fielders outside the 30-yard circle instead of just two.

“The second one may be a suggestion that, the power play of six overs with field restrictions, only two fielders allowed outside the ring. Let the first four overs be batter’s power play with same field restrictions, and post that, the remaining two power play overs should be determined by the fielding captain as and when he wants to take. But those two consecutive overs will also get one fielder extra outside the ring at any stage of the game. So, you know, you are able to control the game better. That’s my personal feeling,” Tendulkar explained.

Proposal 3: Allowing Star Bowlers to Bowl Five Overs

In perhaps his most revolutionary suggestion, Tendulkar questioned the traditional four-over limit imposed on individual bowlers in T20 cricket. He argued that if a top-order batter can occupy the crease and dominate the game for the entirety of the 20 overs, the best bowler in a team should likewise be granted a greater opportunity to influence the outcome.

Tendulkar proposed that one bowler per team should be allowed to bowl a maximum of five overs instead of the standard four. This change would elevate the impact of elite bowlers, giving captains a vital weapon to break partnerships or stem the flow of runs during critical phases of the match.

“And one bowler should be allowed to bowl five overs. Five overs? Yes. Yeah. Because you would invariably, the best bowler of the side is gonna bowl that fifth over. Wouldn’t you wanna see that best bowler bowl more? Of course. Like, the top batters are batting sometimes even 20 overs. Why shouldn’t the best bowler be bowling five overs?” Tendulkar argued.

Will the BCCI Implement Tendulkar’s Proposals?

Whether the BCCI will act upon these structural recommendations remains a major question. While there have been ongoing discussions within the cricketing community regarding the potential removal of the Impact Player rule from the IPL 2028 season onward, the governing body has historically prioritized high-scoring entertainment and television spectacles.
