Ajinkya Rahane pushes for Kartik Tyagi, Anukul Roy to make India debut
Despite a disappointing end to their IPL 2026 campaign, Kolkata Knight Riders captain Ajinkya Rahane has spotlighted two emerging talents as potential future stars for Indian cricket. In the aftermath of KKR’s 40-run defeat to Delhi Capitals at Eden Gardens on May 24, which officially ended their playoff hopes, Rahane opened up about the positives from a turbulent season—specifically highlighting Kartik Tyagi and Anukul Roy.
The KKR skipper did not mince words when expressing his belief in the duo’s potential. After finishing seventh on the points table with 13 points from 14 matches, Rahane emphasized that while the start to the season was rocky, the performances of young players like Tyagi and Roy offered a strong foundation for the future.
Kartik Tyagi’s Breakthrough Season
Kartik Tyagi emerged as one of the most consistent Indian pacers in IPL 2026, claiming 18 wickets across the tournament. His pace, aggression, and fearless attitude stood out, earning praise from both teammates and management. Rahane noted that Tyagi’s impact was evident even before the league began.
“Talking about Kartik Tyagi, he was clear. We played practice games—two, three practice matches—[and] practice sessions as well. He was really clear about his thought process. You will go for runs as a bowler, but as long as you’re clear about what you want to do for your team, that’s what matters,” Rahane said at the post-match press conference.
Tyagi’s ability to adapt quickly, maintain line and length under pressure, and take crucial wickets highlighted his readiness for bigger stages. His performance placed him among the top Indian wicket-takers during the league stage—a remarkable achievement for a young pacer in a hyper-competitive environment.
Anukul Roy’s All-Round Contribution
Equally impressive was left-arm spinner Anukul Roy, who proved to be a valuable all-rounder for KKR. Across 12 matches, Roy picked up nine wickets and chipped in with 89 runs in seven batting appearances, often stabilizing the innings during crucial moments.
Rahane revealed that the team management had already decided before the season began to give Roy an extended run, owing to his dominant showing in domestic cricket—especially in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
“When we sat down [at the start of the season], I thought, This is a great time for Anukul to come in and play each and every game. He had a fantastic Syed Mushtaq Ali season. I believe that whoever has a good season in the domestic league, you carry that confidence forward. Anukul Roy just did that,” Rahane added.
Building a Future for India
For Rahane, the development of Tyagi and Roy isn’t just significant for KKR’s long-term plans—it could have national implications. The seasoned batter believes both youngsters possess the temperament, skill, and clarity of thought required to represent India at the highest level.
“For these two guys, this is just the beginning. I’m sure they have the potential to do really well in the future and go and play at the highest level as well,” he concluded, sending a clear message to selectors.
As Kolkata Knight Riders regroup for the next season, the spotlight may soon shift from Eden Gardens to the national stage—if Ajinkya Rahane’s predictions come true.
