Tamim Iqbal among 29 final candidates in BCB election confirmed
The Countdown to BCB Leadership Begins
The landscape of cricket administration in Bangladesh is set for a significant transformation as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) moves closer to its upcoming Board of Directors election. Following a rigorous nomination verification and withdrawal period, the Election Commission has officially confirmed the final list of 29 candidates who will battle for positions of influence within the national governing body.
Analyzing the Electoral Landscape
The election is divided into distinct categories, each designed to ensure fair representation across the country’s diverse cricket ecosystem. Category-1 focuses on regional and district sports associations, where 10 director positions are up for grabs. Currently, 12 candidates remain in the running to fill these vital roles.
However, the electoral map features several regions where the outcome is already clear. Due to a lack of opposition, a group of candidates is set to be elected unopposed. In the Sylhet Division, Abdul Qaiyum Chowdhury is poised to take the mantle, while Mir Shakrul Alam Simanto from the Bogura District Sports Association and Mirza Faisal Amin from the Thakurgaon District Sports Association have also secured their spots without challenge.
The Dhaka Division sees Sayed Bin Zaman and S M Abdullah Al Fuad moving toward the two available director positions uncontested. Similarly, in the Chattogram Division, the veteran figures Minhajul Abedin Nannu and Moinuddin Chowdhury are slated to be elected unopposed, cementing their roles in the regional setup.
The Battlegrounds: Competitive Districts
While some regions see a clear path to victory, the electoral process remains highly contested in others. The real drama is set to unfold in the Khulna Division, where three contenders—Shafiqul Alam, Shantanu Islam, and Abdus Salam—are locked in a struggle for two positions. Meanwhile, the Barishal Division features a direct head-to-head, with Mizanur Rahman facing off against Muntasir Alam Chowdhury for the single available seat.
The Spotlight on Category-2: Dhaka Cricket Clubs
Category-2, which serves as the representative block for Dhaka-based cricket clubs, is undoubtedly the most intense segment of the election. With 12 director positions available and 16 candidates in the fray, the competition is expected to be fierce.
A major highlight of this election is that Tamim Iqbal among 29 final candidates in BCB election is contesting from the Old DOHS Sports Club. As a former national team captain who has served on the BCB ad-hoc committee, his presence adds a significant layer of interest to the proceedings. The category is packed with experienced administrators and club representatives, including Fahim Sinha (Abahani Limited), Masuduzzaman (Mohammedan Sporting Club), and Asif Rabbani (Shinepukur Cricket Club), among many others.
Other notable figures seeking election in this category include Mirza Yasser Abbas from Azad Sporting Club and Israfil Khosru from Exium Cricketers, both of whom bring unique perspectives to the club-level governance of the sport.
Finalizing the Structure
In addition to the aforementioned categories, Category-3 represents other organizations and institutions. In this section, Sirajuddin Mohammad Alamgir from the University of Chittagong stands as the sole candidate for the single position available, effectively ensuring his uncontested election.
The election process also saw a handful of withdrawals, which helped streamline the final list. Candidates such as Shariful Islam Opu, Mohammad Lutfor Rahman, and Md. Mahmud-ur-Rahman officially pulled their nominations during the final phase of the process, leaving the current pool of 29 individuals to face the electorate.
As the cricket community looks ahead, all eyes are on the upcoming voting process. With a blend of seasoned administrators, former players, and new faces, the resulting board will be tasked with steering the future of Bangladesh cricket through its next chapter. The transition reflects both the continuity of experienced leadership and the desire for fresh strategies within the halls of the BCB.
