The Rise of a Prodigy

The 2026 Indian Premier League season has witnessed a meteoric rise of a new star in the form of 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Playing for the Rajasthan Royals, Sooryavanshi has emerged as a revelation, accumulating 583 runs in just 14 innings. As the franchise successfully navigated their way into the playoffs under the captaincy of Riyan Parag, the young batter has established himself as the leading run-scorer for the team and currently sits among the top five run-getters in the tournament. However, his rapid ascent has sparked a heated debate regarding the sustainability of his development.

The Impact Sub Dilemma

Throughout the season, Rajasthan Royals have frequently utilized Sooryavanshi in the role of an ‘Impact Sub.’ While this tactical move has allowed him to focus exclusively on his batting, it has also shielded him from the rigors of fielding. Cricket pundits have noted that while his batting prowess is undeniable, his involvement in the field has been minimal, partly due to concerns regarding his fitness. The youngster has already suffered two separate injuries while diving to stop the ball this season, leading the Royals to handle him with extreme caution to ensure their primary batter remains available for selection.

Sanjay Manjrekar’s Critique

The situation has drawn strong criticism from former Indian cricketer and seasoned analyst Sanjay Manjrekar. In a recent appearance on the Sportstar Inside Edge podcast, Manjrekar did not mince his words. The former star argued that the current Impact Player rule is detrimental to the holistic development of young players like Sooryavanshi. Manjrekar expressed his firm belief that the BCCI should scrap the rule entirely, highlighting that international cricket does not afford players the luxury of batting without contributing in the field.

“The more I think about it, the more I feel we need to do away with the Impact Player rule for this very reason. Is that really what we want to see about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi? To only see one side of his game,” Manjrekar stated. His primary concern lies in the long-term prospects of the teenager; if Sooryavanshi is to represent the Indian national team, he will inevitably be required to field for the full duration of an innings—a task for which he is currently not being prepared at the IPL level.

A Glimmer of Defensive Potential

Despite the criticism, there have been moments where the teenager has demonstrated his capability in the field. During the Rajasthan Royals’ final group stage match against the Mumbai Indians, the management opted not to use him as an Impact Sub, allowing him to take the field. The decision paid dividends as Sooryavanshi took a crucial catch of Ryan Rickelton, officially becoming the youngest player in IPL history to record a catch in the tournament. This performance serves as a reminder that the talent exists, even if it is currently being under-utilized.

The Path Forward for the Young Star

The overarching consensus among observers is that while the Impact Player rule has provided a platform for Sooryavanshi to showcase his batting, it may be creating a “blind spot” in his professional evolution. For a player of his age, fielding is not merely about stopping runs; it is about fitness, agility, and gaining an intuitive understanding of the game’s complexities. An eventual call-up to the national side seems inevitable, but it is clear that he will need to be fully prepared for the rigors of all-round participation. To reach his full potential, the youngster must be integrated into the field, where the physical demands will naturally push him to improve his fitness and defensive consistency. The debate continues, but the core issue remains the same: the game must ensure that emerging talents are developed completely, rather than being protected by rules that may ultimately limit their readiness for the highest levels of international cricket.
